What is Music Distribution?

January 26, 2011 - 4:52 pm No Comments

Music distribution is the process by which albums and singles get into shops. Distribution companies sign contracts with either record labels or, if they plan to release their music independently, the artists themselves. These contracts give music distribution companies the right to sell the labels/artist’s products to record stores, who will usually have a working relationship or account with them. The distributor will generally take a percentage of the income from each album with the remainder is given to the label.

Sometimes, manufacturing and distribution (M & D) deals are arranged. This means that instead of the record label/artist providing a finished product, they will instead have the distributor pay the costs of manufacturing the product before distribution. When this happens, the distributor will often keep all the income from album sales until the initial investment has been paid off, then take their usual cut from thereafter.

The process by which a music distribution company will decide on whether to enter into a contract with a record label or artist is usually down to a few simple factors. One of the overriding aspects of these decisions is money.

Most music distribution companies will only ever enter into a contract if they can guarantee a return on their investment. This can often be determined by the amount the distributors stand to make.

Some companies will take a flat fee for their work and will in turn guarantee a certain level of distribution. Other distributors, as mentioned before, will take a percentage of the sales.  With this type of contract the distribution company stands to make a large amount of money if the music sells substantially but could equally lose money if the music they are distributing doesn’t sell.

Another factor determining whether a distributor will enter into a contract is simply whether they believe the music is good. If they do not believe the music to be of a certain quality they won’t think it will sell either. Because of this, record companies are often found to have lasting relationships with music distribution companies. A record label with proven sales will be in a better position to negotiate a contract whereas an independent artist is in the position of not having proven sales and therefore will be in a worse position.

There’s No Magic Pill to Make Your Own Beats

May 6, 2010 - 2:07 am No Comments

In this Hiphop “Matrix” there is no shortcut to being successful. In other words, Neo, there is no blue pill! There is nothing magical about making your own beats. There is nothing magical about being successful.

However there is a formula for luck and here it is:

Luck = Opportunity + Preparation

Let’s break that down really quick. You’ve heard of people being in the right place at the right time. We’ll they were lucky. An opportunity presented itself and they were prepared when it happened. No magic necessary.

So the question is how can you be prepared when an opportunity presents itself?

I like to relate my lessons by using my own experiences so here is a perfect example of how I was lucky. At my church, our youth ministry was working on events for planning their youth week. The director of the youth ministry was a friend of mine by the name of Server. Server had seen my group Prophetix perform several times before and he and several other people asked me if we would perform during youth week. I was a bit hesitant at first but I eventually said yes.

About a week later, I was told that KRS-ONE would be performing for our youth week as well. I thought that would be cool because I knew we would be opening up for him. Well, the show went better than I expected and KRS was very impressed with our show. I knew he was giving a lecture to the kids the following day so I went to it because I had heard him speak many times before. He did a History of Hiphop speech that was great!

Later that day, the church had a fish fry and all the kids took pictures with KRS. As we were leaving, I got a “gut feeling” that I should ask him for a contact number. I followed my instinct and asked. He gave me his number but stated it would best if I called him when he got back in 2 weeks from touring in California.

This is were the “luck” comes in…

I asked him if I could come on the tour with him and he looked at me real serious and replied “Word! Are you serious?” My response of course was “YES”. He said the he could work it out but he’d have to check on the logistics. I was to call the number he had given me on Sunday evening and you bet I did.

I called the other members of Prophetix and let them know what was going on and they couldn’t believe it but I could. Lo and behold, I get a phone call back from KRS and he told me that he wouldn’t pay for our trip out to California but he would pay for our trip back, pay for our hotel, pay us $500.00 a piece, and pay us a per diem which is money for every day we were out there in Cali. Sounded fair to me. The total time from me asking him could I go to actually being on a plane to Los Angeles was less than a week!

My “luck” got even better though…

When we got settled in Los Angeles, we had a meeting with KRS where we were debrief on how the shows would go. He explained that he didn’t want us to open up for him but he wanted us to actually be on stage with him during his set. No joke. Talk about a trill. Imagine being on stage with KRS-ONE while you perform his classic joints with him in front of packed audiences. It was great! And we got to perform in so many other cities in Cali from San Fransisco to San Diego in the process so that made the 2 weeks even better.

So yes, I do consider myself lucky but I was prepared when the opportunity presented itself. That is the point I’m making.

Are you prepared if someone comes to you right now and asks you for a CD full of beats or a full demo package? What have you done up to this point in your career to say that you are ready for a life changing opportunity? You should always be prepared for an opportunity. You’ll never know if it will be the lucky one that changes your life.

3 Elements of Grooving HipHop Beats – If Your HipHop Does Not Have This it is Rubbish

January 7, 2009 - 7:38 am No Comments

If you are an aspiring hiphop beat producer, then here is the recipe to produce grooving hiphop beats that will make your audience break the dance floor!

I am going to share with you 3 elements that are going to make or break your hiphop beats. What are they? Okay without much ado, here they are:

The Top 3 Elements of Grooving Hiphop Beats

1) The Drums - This is the one of the most prominent sound in a hiphop beat. In a common hiphop, it is made up of the kick drum, snare and hi-hat. Where the kick drum is the “Boom” and the snare is the “Snap” of what we usually hear the “Boom and Snap”. So, trying to use some hard hitting and booming kick at the low end will get the audience wanted to stand up to dance.

2) The Percussion - All beats has different percussion. But what is percussion actually? It is the background music of your beats that actually determine the genre of your music beats. It can be made up by a lot of different instruments from the regular instruments that we normally hear. And I found Timbaland to be very good in making this unique twist. Master this and your hiphop will have the grooving effect that gets audience total rapture.

3) The Snare – Now you can easily find this in the 2nd and 4th of your beat usually. As aforementioned, this is the “Snap” that will jump out from your beat to get audience attention. Some of the good examples are Forever and Eminem. Try listening to them more often and you will discover how they use the snare in their beats to get your heart pumping hard.

Now you don’t need separate instruments to get a perfect mix of these elements as it used to. Instead, you must have a good beat making software like Sonic Producer that will have all of these instruments in one easy to control interface that allows to make your hiphop beats from your computer.

Click Here to watch a video showing you how making your music beats can be such a fun and easy thing to do. Pay attention to the sound quality of the sample beats and don’t be surprised if you cannot distinguish them with a studio made sound.

Make Hip Hop Beats in 5 Steps

January 5, 2009 - 9:20 pm No Comments

Anyone who has access to a computer with speakers can make hip hop beats. Most people who are just starting to get into it do not know where to begin. These 5 steps will help to get you setup and you will be able to make hip hop beats in no time.

1. Access to a computer with USB or Firewire ports.

Every computer these days comes with USB or Firewire ports. These are necessary to make hip hop beats because they will enable you to connect your MIDI controller (piano/keyboard) to your computer.

2. Buy a MIDI keyboard or controller

Purchase a MIDI controller or full MIDI keyboard online or from a local music store. These days, you can get a full-featured keyboard for as little as $100-$150 which will do all that you need it to do to make hip hop beats.

3. Buy music production software.

Purchase music productions software such as Fruity Loops, Reason, Cubase, Logic, etc. This software will enable you to:

- Load sounds which can be played through your MIDI controller or keyboard

- Record these sounds into the program so they can be edited and arranged

- Program sounds into sequencers with the click of a mouse

- Import downloaded sound expansions to keep your hip hop beats up to date

4. Installation and Setup

Now that you have what you need to get started making hip hop beats, it is time to set it up.

First, install your production software onto your computer. This should be a relatively straightforward process, with full walk through instructions provided by the software.

Next, install your MIDI controller drivers. Again, there should be an installation CD which comes with your keyboard that will easily install your keyboard software.

Once both are installed, open your music production software program. Look for the program’s Options, Preferences, or Setup section, and locate the MIDI Controller or Keyboard Setup. Locate your installed keyboard and select it for use with the program.

Your software and keyboard should now work with one another.

5. Load sounds. play sounds, record sounds.

Now that everything is set up, you can begin to make hip hop beats on your computer. Depending on your software, there are different ways to load sounds into it. Please check your manual to determine this, as every program is different.

Once loaded, you will be able to play the selected sounds with your MIDI controller.

When you click the “Record” button, everything that you play on your keyboard will be recorded as MIDI data into the software program. You can then edit it, change it, move it, arrange it, etc.

Once you become good at the recording process, you can begin to make hip hop beats and full songs right in your software program! Add drums, piano, guitar, or anything else you wish. A lot of these kinds of sounds can be loaded into your keyboard from your software program.

I hope this article has helped you to begin your journey to make hip hop beats!

Rap Music – History and Genres

June 20, 2008 - 12:28 pm No Comments

Those who are young or relatively new to the HipHop culture don’t realize that Rap Music has many different genres:

East Coast: The East Coast, most notably New York City, was the genesis for rap music hitting the mainstream. Run-D.M.C. led the pack, with Rakim and Big Daddy Kane also breaking through to make rap emerge as a national phenomenon.

West Coast: While HipHop was cooking in the East, West Coast rap music gained national recognition in the mid-1980s with performers like Ice T and Too $hort.

Dirty South: While most of the music world’s attention focused on rap coming from New York and Los Angeles, HipHop artists in the South were turning to independent music labels to release their work. Geographically, the Dirty South genre encompassed places as diverse as Houston, Birmingham, and Miami, and was greatly influenced by Ghetto Mafia in the mid-1990s. Musically, Dirty South rap is known for is danceabilty and rhythmic delivery.

Gangsta Rap: Some say Gangsta Rap first emerged on the West Coast with N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton” release, while others credit Ice T with taking Gangsta Rap to national acclaim. Characterized by lyrics glamorizing elements of a criminal lifestyle, violence, promiscuity, misogyny, and materialism, Gangsta Rap’s controversy came to a head with the murder of the West Coast Tupcac Shakur in 1996, and the subsequent murder of the East Coast’s The Notorious B.I.G. in 1997.

Pop Rap: Known for its widespread, mainstream appeal, Pop Rap’s first breakout star was LL Cool J. The Fresh Prince and MC Hammer quickly rose to the top of the Pop Rap scene and the music charts with lyrics that were less controversial than those of the Gangsta Rap genre, and thus were more likely to receive radio airplay.

Christian Rap: While HipHop was garnering a reputation for less than savory lyrics and artists for questionable activities, other artists were expressing their faith through HipHop. Christian Rap took off in the late 1980s and early 1990s with rap groups like P.I.D. and S.F.C.

Jazz Rap: Although Jazz Rap has never enjoyed mainstream commercial success, the genre often incorporates Afrocentric and political themes. Gang Starr and Gil Scott-Heron are often cited as two of the first Jazz rappers.

Conscious HipHop: Similar to Jazz Rap, Conscious HipHop has never enjoyed mass commercial success. With an emphasis on social issues, Conscious HipHop isn’t overtly political, but rather deals with issues such as poverty and religion.

Electro HipHop: A combination of dance music and rap, Electro HipHop first emerged in the 1980s on the West Coast from artists like Arabian Prince and Egyptian Lover. By the mid-1990s, Electro HipHop had pretty much run its course.

The Best Hip Hop Beat Maker

May 30, 2008 - 9:52 pm No Comments

Looking for a hip hop beat maker? Well, let me share with you some fundamentals that you must know before looking any further. You see, not all beats are created equal and that is very much depending on the 3 things below.

Okay, these are basic stuff but they are also the most important components to look into when making your hiphop beats or when you are searching for the right hip hop beat maker.

(1) Audio Loops – This made up as one of the major ingredient of great hip hop beats. You should really take some time and attention here when laying down your audio loops as some tweaking will make the beats sound amazing and unique. You must learn how make various editing on the loops by making compression, stretching and adding effects to it with plugins. A good music beat maker will have all these functions.

(2) Midi Drum – Okay, this is another important ingredient to have in order to produce amazing hiphop beats. You will need a correct mixture of MIDI drum pattern to create the backing track for your hip hop beat. By correct mixture, I mean not just having more than one drum loop playing together but with variety of drum patterns that can complement one another to enhance the beat. Otherwise, you hiphop beat is just another common hiphop. You will need to make tweaking to it by speeding up the tempo etc. This might sound complicated but with a good music beat maker, you will have the MIDI synthesizer and controller included to make this task a breeze.

(3) Bassline – Not all hip hop enthusiast tried this but I find it to be a good combination by adding some bassline into the hiphop beats I made. Well, bassline that is also known as bassline house is a sub-genre of UK garage music that mixes elements of 4×4 garage, speed garage and R&B. It also shares characteristics with fellow sub-genres dubstep and grime that emphasize on bass. If you haven’t try this, you may want to add this into your hiphop production.

By: Hans Alexander

About the Author:
And again, a good music beat maker will have this feature built in as well. The one I am using also comes with MP3 export capability that allows me to save my hip hop beats into MP3 format that can be played with various media player. After trying so many beat makers, I must say that this is the best hip hop beat maker that I have ever used. Click Here to see some sample beats it produced.
